2007 National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day

In an effort to increase awareness and support in the Erie County community for "National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day," Family Voices Network initiated a process that changes expectations. Prior to 2007 we had attempted to gain support for awareness day by holding a press conference. During the press conference we realized that out of all the agencies within our large county we had not quite reached as many people as intended. During 2007 we launched a luncheon held at the Buffalo Convention Center.

Much of the process to engage the community included getting the word out to inform our community of our efforts. The social marketing team created an email list to notify the community. The results of our efforts is evident by the results -- (view the 2007 Awareness Day Results Report).

Additionally, view our newsletter where the community supported this event in Erie County as a whole. There were several techniques used view our documents:

  • Newsletter - highlighting the activities on May 8, 2008.
  • Our Survey -- used to determine how the community responded to the event.
  • Sponsorship Request -- where 80 agencies participated to help raise awareness for children's mental health.
  • Tissue Box -- created a tissue box to raise funds for the luncheon to support this event by the community.
  • Parent & Youth Invitation -- families within Erie County received this invitation that informed them of the activities occurring within our county to support children's mental health.
  • Progress Report -- a booklet created by our Evaluation Team to show progress of the children, youth and families currently enrolled in wraparound in Erie County. This booklet was distributed to all attendees at the luncheon to show our progress.

Much work is involved in the planning of such a large luncheon. In attendance were 450 people representing 80+ agencies within the Erie County Community. The planning process started in November in preparation for the month of May. We received support from our family movement (Families CAN); Mental Health Association-Erie County, Youth Empowerment Advocacy Group (our youth movement), Action for Mental Health and several community organization.
