Children's Mental Health Awareness Day

The Erie County community has developed a Vision for supporting "National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day." In February 2008, our community made a decision to create a vision to support our children, youth and families experiencing serious emotional, behavioral and/or social challenges in their lives. Children Mental & Behavioral Health Awareness

Each year, we strive to increase awareness about children's mental health within Erie County. We plan different events throughout the county that involves various communities and organizations. This takes place each year during the month of May and we select a day within the second week of May as our awareness day to coincide with the “National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.”

Erie County is one of 61 communities across the country implementing the system of care changes in how services should be delivered to children, youth and families experiencing mental health and behavioral challenges.

Celebrating the Success of our Families

We have changed the name of the event to represent all children and youth within the Erie County System of Care to be more reflective of all children at risk of being removed from their homes, schools and community because of serious emotional, behavioral or social challenges they may experience. Our goal is to:

  • raises awareness for children’s mental health and behavior needs,
  • demonstrates how children’s mental health initiatives promote recovery and resilience, and
  • shows how these initiatives are an effective strategy for transforming the children’s mental health service delivery systems across the country.

Thoughts to Remember

The Erie County Celebrating the Success of our Families campaign is part of a national public information and education campaign to:

Increase public awareness about the importance of protecting and nurturing the mental health and behavioral challenges of children, youth and adolescents. Additionally, to foster recognition that many children have mental health and behavioral problems that are real, painful, and sometimes severe while encouraging parents, caregivers and legal guardians to seek early, appropriate treatment and services.

The campaign helps families, educators, health care providers, and young people recognize mental health problems and to seek or recommend appropriate services. It also strives to reduce the stigma associated with mental health problems.

On Awareness Day helps families, educators, health care providers, and young people to recognize those experiencing mental health or behavioral needs and to encourage those in need to look for help or to recommend appropriate services. It also strives to reduce the stigma associated with mental health through education.

Family Voices Network of Erie County, Mental Health Association and other community partners are working collaboratively to address the needs of children and adults with mental health or behavioral challenges.

  • Family Voices Network of Erie County & Families CAN celebrates the success of families on Awareness Day.
  • Mental Health Association work with communities to distribute the “Green Ribbon Bookmark” to raise awareness for childhood depression.
  • Our community support show their support through sponsorships, developing plans to help show their support, participating and sharing of resources to help us.

We encourage everyone to get involved with these activities to help us educate and inform our communities about mental health, behavioral health and the services that are available to help children, youth and families that are struggles. Above all, us to recognize and support others in the community who work with our families.
