Role of an advocate within the system of care
The advocates roles is not to tell the parents/family what to do but to find out from the family what is it they need to meet their families needs. They work with the family to understand their strengths and goals and to help the family achieve their goals. The primary role of a family advocate is:
- Provide education to the family member but also the system
- To help identify the strength and needs of families
- To be a mediator between the system and the family by helping to educate the system on the needs of the family.
- Or to help the family understand the different roles of the difference agencies are within the system and how they affect the family.
